Overview
The School of Healthcare has a long history of working in partnership with healthcare organisations to generate, disseminate and embed knowledge as a collaborative endeavour. One way in which it achieves this is through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs). The fundamental principles behind KTPs was established 31 years ago to enable UK businesses of all sizes from all types of industry, including healthcare, to take advantage of the wide range of expertise and knowledge available in UK universities. KTP’s are amongst the world’s leading initiatives, using the knowledge and skills of high calibre graduates and their academic supervisors to inject fresh ideas into industry.

Importance
Each partnership employs one or more high calibre researchers for a project lasting one to three years, generating and transferring the knowledge into the organisation. Each researcher is supported by an academic framework from the University and works in the organisation on the project, which is chosen by the organisation and core to the strategic development of the business or service. Through the relationship developed with organisations through KTPs, the university is also provided with a relevant and improved understanding of the challenges health and social care organisations encounter, and their business requirements and operations.

Impact
Knowledge Transfer partnerships are a UK wide programme funded by 17 organisations, with match funding coming from health and social care organisations. KTPs enable businesses to generate original solutions to practice based or organisational problems through research.

The aim of KTPs is to:

  • Improve the outcomes and advantage of the organisation
  • Enhance the careers of recently qualified people
  • Enhance the understanding of organisational issues and drivers within universities.
  • Promote enterprise, innovation and productivity

Academic Lead for each KTP is drawn from the research and organisational development expertise in the School
