About the Institute

The Institute for Innovation in Professional Practice will provide an exciting and cutting edge focus for research and scholarship, teaching and learning, enterprise and knowledge transfer (EKT) related to leadership and professional practice. The Institute will aim to improve the outcomes of health and social care, raise quality of care delivery and accelerate the uptake of proven innovations, models and processes by;

  • Developing internal and external partnerships
  • Improving flexibility in educational provision
  • Developing staff capacity in research EKT and education
  • Enhancing the quality of the student practice experience

The key feature of this Institute is it's interprofessional and practice focus, taking into account that good inter professional working requires strong and self confident professionals who are secure in their own professional roles.

The Academic Units

The Academic Unit of Leadership and Management is focussed on the importance of leadership and management in shaping professional practice and care provision.  Effective leadership and management throughout health and social care organisations is strongly associated with service improvement. This unit will endeavour to develop further the understanding of leadership in health and social care through research.  The academic unit will draw on the extensive experience of practical leadership development previously carried out by the Centre for the Development of Healthcare Practice (CDHPP), with a continuing commitment to developing leadership at all levels, and to developing organisational approaches to leading that create environments where practice can thrive.  We offer a full range of options for organisations, teams and individuals to develop their leadership potential from (among others) the 'Leading an Empowered Organisation' programme and Leadership Effectiveness Analysis, through to the Post Graduate Certificate in Management and Leadership.

The Academic Unit of Advanced Practice is focused on professional practice and the importance this has within healthcare professionals' careers from initial qualification through to advanced practice. Practice is a central focus of all healthcare professionals' roles and this unit will provide a base to explore, develop and enhance practice through learning and teaching, enterprise and knowledge transfer (EKT), research and scholarship. The unit will undertake research which will underpin practice and will have a strong focus on external drivers related to practice. An exciting new programme commences in September 2009 - the MSc in Advanced Practice, an interprofessional competence based programme which will enable those who work together to study together.  The staff within the Unit are from a variety of disciplines and this provides a rich and dynamic environment to support developments related to professional practice for the future.

In near future the Institute will be developing a Practice Academy to develop further the place of clinical practice in the infrastructure of the School.
