Facilities

What Facilities are available to research students?
The School is housed in the historic Baines Wing, one of the earliest buildings in University. The building has been carefully restored with major investment to create a bespoke, self-contained Postgraduate Suite.

The Postgraduate Suite

This purpose built accommodation provides desk space, a PC and storage areas for full and part-time students and includes administration and telecom facilities. An additional computer cluster is also located in the Baines Wing which is used by students from across the campus and is centrally maintained. The School's Research Office is conveniently located in the same area, which accommodates the administration and secretarial support for research.

Each office has a shared printer and phone and students have access to free copying and stationery as required. Part-time students have access to all these facilities but are expected to share a desk.

The University has one of the UK 's largest academic libraries and increasing numbers of journals are now available electronically. The University has an active Graduate Centre and the School's research students have space in the Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment for exchange of news, views and ideas.

Training budget

All research students receive a training budget, (up to £1000pa for full-time students). Students can use these monies in any way to support their studies. Commonly they are used for conference attendance, fieldwork costs, specialist training and interview transcription.
