The School of Healthcare at the University of Leeds wants to support top-quality graduates to become leaders in shaping the health services of tomorrow.

The School is pleased to offer a range of funded and self-funded opportunities for individuals wishing to study in the following applied research areas: Wound Care, Decision Making, Pain Management, Medicines Management, Mental Health, Cardiovascular Care and Methodological Development.

We are looking for individuals who want to work in partnership with us to grow our research community and research programmes. We have a vibrant postgraduate research culture, strong connections with industry and excellent facilities for PhD students.

In 2012, we have funded studentships available to top-quality applicants who are keen to undertake full- time PhD studies in the following topic areas:

  • Improving medicines management for patients with chronic pain
  • Communication across transitions of care in the hospital setting
  • Involving service users and carers in long term conditions research
  • Collaborative practice in psychiatry

In 2012, successful applicants will be awarded a package worth £16,000 per year, which includes the full payment of fees, a generous tax free bursary, and a training account. Our PhD community is highly valued and supported by outstanding facilities, our specially designed PGR suit and our internationally renowned research academics.

There are also opportunities for individuals who are self-funded, or would like support from experts to apply for funds to support their research training (Masters, PhD and Post Doctoral) that matches our research areas.  Potential students may also be eligible for a University of Leeds scholarship (further details can be found at at http://scholarships.leeds.ac.uk

The closing date for receipt of fully completed applications submitted to the faculty midday on 1st February 2012 (you can apply online at  http://www.leeds.ac.uk/students/apply_research.htm). Interviews will be held on 22nd February Applicants are asked to keep this date free for interview.

Criteria for School award for PhD studentship

  1. Student to fulfil University of Leeds Faculty of Medicine and Health entry criteria for PhD study, found at http://www.leeds.ac.uk/medhealth/grad/docs/AdmissionsPolicy_session10_11_003.pdf
  2. PhD to be held full-time in the School of Healthcare. This includes attendance a minimum of 3 days a week and full participation in a research training programme.
  3. Goodness of fit between student background, research skills and topic  (see list above).
  4. Start date will be September 2012.

NB: Awards are made on an ‘underwriting’ PhD cost basis.  Students are required to apply for other relevant PhD training awards (as agreed with PGRT & DoRI) in the 12 months following an award.
