Research Ethics at the School of Healthcare

The School of Healthcare Research Ethics Committee (SHREC) has been established to consider for approval any/all research (including evaluation) to be undertaken by School of Healthcare staff or students which involves primary research with human subjects or their data and that is outside of the NHS ethical approval process.

Terms of reference

It scrutinises all requests from researchers involving access to staff, students and/or documentation from the School of Healthcare and exists to protect the interests of potential research participants, including staff and students

It will refer proposals with significant and unresolved ethical dimensions to Faculty of Medicine and Health Research Ethics Committee and advises the School regarding responsible attitudes and behaviour towards research, and promote professional responsibility and accountability within the research domain.

To report to the School Research Strategy Group and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Research Ethics Committee on the proposals submitted and approved on an annual basis.

Making an application 

To submit to SHREC you need to look at the dates listed below of the SHREC meetings and decide at which meeting you want your project to be considered. Application forms need to be completed and  you will need to think about the perceived risks to your research participants, other ethical issues and your proposed action to address these.

SHREC meet monthly throughout the academic year. The dates of the meetings are arranged a year in advance and are shown below, in the monthly meeting schedule.
