BIOGRAPHY

José Closs has been Professor of Nursing Research at the University of Leeds since 2000. Her first degree was in human biology; her MPhil in physiology; her PhD in social sciences; and she trained as a general nurse at St George’s Hospital in London. She has been an active researcher for more than 25 years, studying a wide range of clinical topics. Her main current interest is in pain assessment and management for neglected groups, particularly those who have difficulty communicating. José leads the Symptom Management and Long Term Conditions research programme in the School of Healthcare and is a founder member of the Leeds Pallium Research Group. This is a collaborative, interdisciplinary partnership between the University of Leeds, St Gemma’s Hospice, Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and Leeds Metropolitan University. It was formed in 2003 to provide a lead for regional, national and international developments in pain management and palliative care research.
