About Wound management
We are studying ‘what works’ in the care of chronic wounds by nurses, as well as methods for preventing wounds, in particular pressure ulcers. Keeping people safe while in our care is a NHS priority and pressure ulcer prevention is an important indicator of the quality of nursing care in community and hospital settings. Healing pressure, foot or leg ulcers requires the appropriate use of dressings, bandages and other treatments to treat infection and support the body in tissue repair, and we are building the evidence base.
Our research asks the question about ‘what works’ in wound care. When we identified gaps in knowledge (such as the best way to take samples from infected wounds), the NHS Health Technology Assessment Programme has commissioned researchers to answer these questions. We have also identified where treatments don’t help, such as with ultrasound machines for severe leg ulcers, and this means the NHS knows not to invest in this technology, saving nurses time and the costs of equipment. Our research is built into clinical guidelines across the world.
