Why did you choose Leeds?
The city of Leeds is a very vibrant, diverse and cosmopolitan city, not forgetting the fabulous shops! The University has so much to offer, in terms of both academia and also social events. There is something for everyone and a great opportunity to meet new people. The University is renowned for its excellent teaching and facilities, as well as the beautiful scenic buildings on campus. I spoke to friends and family who previously attended the university, but once I came to visit on an open day I knew this was the university for me!
Why did you choose your course?
I have always had a keen interest in the medical field and helping people; Audiology provided me with an excellent way of combining my interest in biology and to fulfil my desire to work and care for people, in a specialised health care profession. Career prospects are excellent, in the UK and worldwide. The recent introduction of the higher training scheme for Audiology graduates provides fantastic opportunities for progression and specialising further within the various branches of Audiology.
What has been the highlight of the course?
The BSc (Hons) Audiology degree has one year clinical placement in year 3; you have taster placements prior to this. Being able to go out on placement was the highlight of the course; it enables you to put theory into practice with a view to improving people's lives. The clinical placements in years 1 and 2 provide the opportunity to build up confidence with patients and assisting with testing until you are able to work independently in year 3. This was very exciting and rewarding, despite a slight adjustment to the early morning starts!
Would you recommend it to other people?
After having the opportunity to study Audiology at Leeds University, I had a wonderful experience. Four years seems a long time, but time does definitely fly when you're having fun! The newly refurbished Audiology labs provide excellent facilities to help maintain clinical skills. Leeds is a great place to study Audiology; it gives you lots of exposure to research and clinical aspects. The lecturers are a great team of people, very friendly and always there to help. I couldn't have asked for more!
What do you plan to do after graduation?
I am currently in the process of applying to work within the NHS, and hopefully aim to gain further training with a view to specialising in paediatric audiology.
