What is BSc (Hons) Healthcare Sciences (Cardiology)?
This new 3 year course is part of the Modernising Scientific Careers programme. The BSc (Hons) Healthcare Sciences (Cardiology) focuses primarily on treatment of the heart, as well as the circulatory system. The degree integrates academic and workplace learning with an extended academic year. Placements are an integral part of your learning and we have an established circuit of high quality environments for you to learn from leading professionals. Cardiologists work in a challenging and stimulating environment, allowing both caring and analytical problem solving to provide the best level of patient care and support. Subject to approval.
Why study Cardiology?
Graduate employment is excellent. On graduation, students are qualified to work at a Band 5 level within an NHS cardiology department and 100 % of our students have been employed as a Cardiac Physiologist on graduation in the last 5 years .
As a cardiac physiology student, or qualified cardiac physiology, there may be opportunities for you to use your skills abroad we are currently working with international universities to organise internation electives , we also currently have a graduate working in New Zealand.
The Cardiac Physiology lecturing staff are all qualified Cardiac physiologists with expertise in different fields of Cardiology and higher education teaching and/or research. The lecturers are members of the Society for Cardiological Science and Technology and the British Society for Echocardiography, sitting on various professional committees and/or attending and presenting at international Cardiology conferences.
Healthcare scientists who work in physiological sciences investigate the functioning of organ/body systems to diagnose abnormalities, and find ways to restore function and/or reduce disabling consequences to the patient. Cardiac physiologists carry out crucial diagnostic and analytical procedures for patients - ranging from babies to the elderly - with known or suspected heart disease. Graduate Cardiac physiologists have a lot of patient contact, and work as part of a large team providing care to heart patients, including cardiographers, cardiologists (doctors), specialist nurses and operating department practitioners.
